IFAD-VCDP Distributes N59million Worth Of Farm Implements to Anambra Farmers Affected By Flood



Succor has come way of farmers in Anambra State recently affected by flood as The International Fund for Agriculture (IFAD) and Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), donates N59.5 million waorth of agro inputs to the farmers, to enable them go back to work.

In a speech presented by the Acting National Coordinator, The International Fund for Agriculture (IFAD) and Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) Fatima Aliyu, she commiserated with the government and people of Anambra State, especially those affected by the flood who lost properties, farmlands and lives to the natural disaster.

The Acting National Coordinator represented at the event by the Knowledge Management and Communication Advisor, IFAD/VCDP, Vera Onyeaka-Onyido said “in response to the effects of the floods and in an effort to provide succor to our farmers across participating states, the VCDP reallocated funds and set aside N250million to provide agro inputs and equipment to the affected farmers to carry out dry season farming.”


Dr. Aliyu informed that a total of 1,495 farmers will be supported across the 9 VDP participating states Anambra, Benue, Ebonyi, Enugu, Kogi, Nassarawa, Niger, Ogun, and Taraba to produce rice during the dry season under irrigation adding that the aim is to alleviate the devastating effects of the floods and restore the farmers’ livelihood.

On his part, the State Programme Coordinator, IFAD-VCDP, Nnamdi Agwuncha enjoined farmers to make proper use of the implements which includes water pumps, fertilisers, farrow 44 rice, herbicides, etc saying farmers who put the agro inputs will be given more support in 2023, when the programme starts to disburse $5million agro support.

Mr. Agwuncha warned them not to sell the items as he and his team will visit farms across the state for proper monitoring.

Commissioners for Agriculture, Mr. Forster Ihejiofor and his Budget and Economic Planning counterpart, Ms Chiamaka Nnake both thanked the IFAD-VCDP for their assistance and praised the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo for his keen interest and support to agriculture in the state. They both promised that soon, the state counterpart funding will be released as it has been approved by the governor except for some bureaucratic hitches.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Mr. Onyia Ozo, Mrs Bridget Orji and Mrs Ngozi Ebue all thanked coordinators of the programme and the state government for their various assistance while revealing that through farming, they have been able to exit from poverty. They also promised to put the farm implements to good use.

Highlight of the event was distribution of the agro inputs proper.
