How Alleged N5m Inducement Fuels Solidarity Visits To Enugu Governor

ENUGU–There are strong indications that the spike in solidarity visits to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi by communities and groups in Enugu State is as a result of an alleged five million naira reward each group gets during the visit.

Since the conclusion of the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in June this year, the Governor has literally brought activities of his government to a standstill with encouragement of all manner of groups who visit to sing to his praises as if his tenure was over.

Sources stated that the visits intensified after it was discovered that an alleged five million was mapped out as “appreciation” to any group that visits.

To this end, all manner of people are now coming together under any name to pay solidarity on daily basis and get their share of the largesse.

It was gathered that these groups go as far as lobbying officials of the administration to convince the governor on why he should receive them and in return for percentage from the largese.

The Governor has continued to encourage the visits by dedicating a portion in government house premises where rented canopies and chairs are permanently fixed to receive them. chairs are permanently fixed to receive them.

As earlier as 11am or noon each day, Govenor Ugwuanyi is said to dress on his white attire and white cap and would sit in one of the canopies as approved groups take turns to clap and chant praises for him.

Disappointedly, the only message that each of these groups keep reciting is that they came to thank him for the peace existing in the state and appointment of either their son as Commissioner, Special Adviser or Special Assistant.

Unfortunately, these are appointments made by the Governor since 2019, even as some who benefitted from it then have either resigned to contest offices in the 2023 general election or have few months left to conclude their assignments.

“They will not tell the Governor that primary school teachers in the state have been on strike since last month over minimum wage and that the students did not write their promotional examinations due to the strike. They will not tell the governor that local government and health workers in the 17 local government councils in the state are also on strike.

“They will not make him know that infrastructure in the state have collapsed; that potholes have taken over Enugu Urban roads; that dirts are littered everywhere in town because ESWAMA’s trucks are rickety and can hardly evacuate wastes, among others.

“The money being mapped out to pay these praise singers can be used to pay these primary school teachers their N30,000 minimum wage or that of health workers. We can channel this money into other ventures to improve the state.

“He still has time to entertain praise singers after the 2023 general elections or even when campaigns start,” the source said.

The source added that it was disappointing that Enugu was the only state at the moment where “this manner of visit is taking place and encouraged by a government that has almost ten months to exit office.”
